Vintage Lifestyle: Color & texture

By April 11, 2012Blog

I’ve always been drawn to color. Lots and lots of color. In college, my favorite class ever was “Color Theory.” It was a required class that I thought had nothing to do with my major and therefore was a major waste of money. Boy was I wrong! Maybe it was because it was all. about. color. Maybe it was the weirdo professor who, on the first day of class, exceeded all of my expectations of art school by jumping up on desks and quoting lines from “The Dead Poets Society.” Whatever it was, I loved this class and I’ve never looked at color the same.

Lately I’ve been drawn to afghans. They embody, for me, what all great art must have: color, texture and pattern. Growing up we had two afghans in our house. One was shades of blue and white in a zig zag cheveron pattern while the other was very loose knit with 6 or 8 bold, fat stripes. The looser knit afghan had big loops -perfect for sticking your big toe through- and was always my last choice on cold winter days. It didn’t provide maximum warmth but it DID prove to be a great canopy when making blanket forts.

I picked up this striped afghan (pictured below) just before winter and it proved to be a great purchase! This was the first winter we spent in our cute little house and we discovered its a cute little drafty house. Colorful afghan + tension rod = colorful and useful curtains and a lower heating bill!
