We’re thrilled to be introducing the first of our three 2015 Spring Market (May 9th!) FirstBank Scholarship winners. Our scholarship winners are all new to the Horseshoe Market, are emerging in the maker scene and wowed us with their creativity, inspired designs and interesting stories. First up, Mandy Hupp of KatMandu Designs!

Tell us about your art or craft and how you got started creating.

KatMandu Designs came out of a need to create things at a young age. I would make drawstring bags, doll clothes and tiny pillows with my best friend, Katie. We sold our handmade items to neighbors and used the cash for dollar movies and DQ blizzards. Katie’s mom had the cute idea to name our business, “KatMandu” (a combination of our names).

As Katie and I got older the hobby fizzled and we sought out different priorities. In 2007 I found myself needing to create. I started up KatMandu again and have been making purses, leather jewelry and yoga bags ever since.

Selling in several boutiques in Kansas, Colorado, Kentucky, Missouri and even overseas; KatMandu has graced the hands of many appreciative customers. My etsy shop has seen sales all across the country which is really exciting to me.  I’ve participated in several markets in Kansas and was honored to be part of the ‘Renegade Fall Market’ in Austin Texas in 2013. Denver has been a wonderful place for me to grow with KatMandu as well.

What’s your favorite thing(s) about being an artist/creator working and living in Denver and Colorado?

I moved to Denver from Wichita, Kansas just a year ago. I’ve been drenched in love and kindness from the maker/creator community. Denver has a wonderful scene of artists and musicians. I find it so reassuring to be invited to so many community/music/handmade events.

What about the Horseshoe Market are you looking forward to, and what will folks find at your booth?

I’m really looking forward to connecting with other makers. Building a great network is important. I also love chatting with my customers. Hearing their feedback on my designs fills my heart. I’ll be showcasing my yoga bags, fabric/leather clutches and leather earrings at the May 9th market. You’l find unique creations from fabrics I acquired while thrifting/estate sale shopping and careful curating. All of the leather used in my designs is up-cycled. Mixing the new trendy fabric with the retro fabrics gives my items a fun twist.
