I came across a quote this week (of course I can’t remember where) that said something along the lines of, “vintage everything is better than modern anything.” While I may not share that belief 100%, (the bullet bra comes to mind..) I mostly agree!
So, I got to thinking about the vintage items that I could never trade in for modern, and decided to share my top 5 with you.
1: Letterman Sweaters. They have been done and re-done by everyone from Juicy Couture to American Eagle. But for me, there is a romance about authentic, vintage letterman sweaters… a mystery -a whole movie full of stories. I started collecting them a few years ago and pretty much live in them from October-April. I like to think that every sweater I own was once worn by a gorgeous dude in the 1950s (probably named “Johnny”) and from time to time, wrapped around the shoulders of a most fashionable, sassy, prom queen with a name like “Penny” or “Cherry”. This one below found here on Etsy.
2: Pre-1950’s suitcases. Yes, they are kind of a pain to travel with and everyone gives you crazy eyes while walking through the airport, but they are just unbeatable. My house is full of them. I use them in every way I can; coffee tables, stacking storage, desktops, etc. There is a charming and romantic flare about them.. Where have they been? Who have they traveled alongside?
3: Furniture, tables and chairs, patio sets. They were more interesting to look at and simply built better back in the day. The set below is from Etsy, found here.
4: Cars! I guess this isn’t really me not trading vintage for modern because we don’t own one. Neither my husband or I have interest in learning how to fix them.. so it would be impractical for us to think we could be successful owners. Maybe someday though.. I have a serious obsession with late 50’s El Caminos. So, if I knew how to fix old cars, this would be legit!
5: Home. The newest house I’ve ever lived in was built in the 1970’s. Our current residence was built in the 1870’s. There are always weird creaks in the floor boards, heat that escapes through the attic and strange electrical oddities, but I wouldn’t ever trade the plaster for drywall. This is my dream home, from Readymade.
Our love of history is what leads us to vintage. These items are little pieces of history that we can touch and feel. They allow us to float away with our imagination and dream of a time when everything was colorful and perfect and just a little bit odd–like us =)
