Vendors–are you ready to hit the road? I hope so. This summer’s going to be a great experience for everyone, especially with Horseshoe hitting the road. But what about your taxes? You remember taxes, right? And your tax license?

Every place you vend, you must collect and remit sales tax of some sort. Each town is different. Before vending in a new town, you should find the information for collecting taxes on that town’s website. Many towns do give itinerant vendors a break, sometimes with a one-day or several-day license for a nominal fee. Other towns don’t collect at all, as all taxes are sent to the state, who then refunds the town the proper amount.

For your information, Horseshoe Craft and Flea Market has already done all the heavy lifting for you! To wit:

  • Leadville and Georgetown are not requiring tax licenses from vendors. Instead, they are requiring a “special event” license. This is paid for by Horseshoe! You don’t have to apply or pay for this license.
  • You do, however, have to collect the sales taxes and remit them to Horseshoe at the end of the show. The combined tax rate in both Georgetown and Leadville is 6.9%.
  • In order to keep track for the day, I recommend figuring the tax on your sale first, and then adding it up. Write down the tax amount for each sale and then add that up and remit it at the end of the day. This will be the most accurate way to keep track.
  • We don’t yet have information about Fort Vasquez/Weld County yet. We will have to get back to you on that. But fear not! Horseshoe is on it, and we will let you know what you need to do.

I hope you are prepared to go on the road!

Amy Kalinchuk vends outdoors way too often. She is not a tax nor a business expert–just an entrepreneur like you, who’s been to a few rodeos. Her big summer show this year will be in Las Vegas, Nevada, selling her roller derby necklaces. You can look at them here: http://www.crafte-revolution.com
