The third winner of the FirstBank Horseshoe Scholarship Program is Daniel Schaefer of Schaefer Interactive. Daniel makes minimalist modern styled handmade wood pieces. His simple pieces help keep you organized and his toys engage kids in interactive play without electronics. We think that’s pretty great! His very first market is the Horseshoe Market on October 3rd. Bring your kiddos and take a look at his work!

1. Tell us about your art or craft and how you got started creating.

I make minimalist modern styled handmade wood pieces focused on organization or interactive play. I’m really interested in creating and selling wood pieces that people can use for several different purposes or modes.

For example, I got my start in creating by making Rainbow Rockers with a few simple tools bought off Craigslist. These rockers for kids between ages 3 and 8 are interesting because there are three multiple modes of play. In one mode, kids can rock themselves. In another mode, kids can turn the rocker on its side and it becomes a desk. A third mode, kids can turn the rocker into a bridge and crawl underneath it.

This idea of toys or furniture that offer a flexibility to turn into different things has fundamentally shaped my creative impulse. And, the Rainbow Rocker has exposed me to different techniques and woodworking styles that have helped me develop my skills as a woodworker.

2. What’s your favorite thing(s) about being an artist/creator working and living in Denver and Colorado?
I really enjoy working and living in Denver and Colorado. There is a rich diversity of woodworking styles that seem to come together in interesting ways in Denver. However, one of my favorite things about being a woodworker in Denver is really the sun. We enjoy over 300 days of sunshine a year which means I can move my woodworking outdoors. It is so nice working outdoors on a piece underneath blue skies with a bright sun.

3. What about the Horseshoe Market are you looking forward to, and what will folks find at your booth?

This is my first craft show. I am excited and looking forward to meeting people and showing off my wood crafts. I’ve gone to the Horseshoe Market last year and really enjoyed meeting and talking to vendors. Now that it’s my turn, I am simply excited.

Folks will find a sampling of the different wood pieces I make from Rainbow Rockers – rockers for kids, the Command Center – a peg board organizer for the busy family, corner book shelves, wood benches, and different organizers.
